WINNERS

10-10.jpg

Leon Chang, 15

Bio: I am a sophomore at Tsinghua International School. I started learning photography in primary school, but I didn’t fall in love with it until 8th grade. When I was in 9th grade, my dad bought me my own 7D Mark II DSLR camera. It was a budget APS-C camera, but I still got great results with it. In 10th grade, I started learning filmmaking. This year, I started a photography club in my school, in which I give lectures about photography every two weeks for about one hour. Giving lectures on things I already know reinforces and unifies my skills. From the original pieces of information from YouTube, I now have my own style of shooting, and my own preferences.

Statement: This photograph illustrates two Arctic Terns flirting. The male tern captures the fish, and gives it to the female tern to show love. The photograph was shot backlit. The feather on the tern looks stunning because of the lighting. This photograph was hard to capture because arctic terns can be aggressive when you invade their space. It is quite risky to point a big cannon at them up close, so I was risking the chance of being attacked.

Simon Floris, 17

Bio: Also known as Volleygod, Little Zero, Exa3, Monk Boy, Death Boy. Jack of all trades, hoping to be master of one. Going to film school because this photography thingy isn't working out for me.

Statement: Vince Staples at Roskilde Festival. This was the most animalistic concert I had ever been to: every minute the audience would switch between creating giant circles in the pits and filling them up with their bodies, clashing with and hitting other people. I lost my shoe in there.

“Plastic Footprint”
Cherie Chung, 19

Often capturing street photography, Cherie is most skilled at capturing candid shots that show emotions and relationships between people and seeks to continue to do so as she travels around the world.

Statement: Every step we take, we leave behind plastic foot prints. Plastic is used to wrap our food, our electronics, our lives. It tracks our journey, as we ignorantly continue to disregard the environment around us, and continue to add to the pile of destruction.

Duxtin Liady, 19

Bio: Duxtin Liady is an Indonesian-born Chinese falling in love with Beijing, but not so much.
